Feeling overwhelmed and burnt out? Here are some tips to help reduce stress.

One of the best ways to reduce stress is exercising.  According to Dr. Micheal Otto, professor of psychology at Boston University, “The link between exercise and mood is pretty strong. Usually within five minutes after moderate exercise you get a mood enhancement effect.”  Try going on a walk, it might help reduce stress.

Writing in a journal is another great way to reduce stress.  Writing is a form of therapy.  Some people write in gratitude journals, it helps them focus on the positive in their day. Others do free writes, take a minute or two and just write.  The goal is to write the entire amount of time, don’t stop.  This style of writing is like word vomit. It helps clear people’s heads in a quick efficient way.

Another way to reduce stress is to get enough sleep. This can be difficult as college students, especially trying to juggle school, job, and a social life. Sleep is usually the first thing to be sacrificed to a busy schedule.  Sleep allows the body to reset and be ready for tomorrow. If the body is not given enough time to reset it can severely hinder its performance capacity for the next day’s tasks.  The recommended amount of sleep is 8 hours a night.  Try it out for a week, it could make a huge difference.

The next tip is to take a warm bath.  Studies have found that taking a warm bath can decrease stress.  Warm baths ease muscle tension, which makes the body feel more relaxed.  Baths also help people sleep better at night.

The last tip for reducing stress is to do something fun! Set time aside to do something that brings joy.  One could hang out with friends, read a book, visit family or go for a drive.
