On Monday, October 27, the Snow College Business Club held an awards ceremony for the top five finalists in a business plan contest.

Each of the finalists was well prepared with a variety of ideas; from Haylie Miller’s “driving safety” idea to Bruce Peck’s winning idea of “scholarplan.org.”

The first place finalist, Bruce Peck, is passionate about helping potential students attend college. His blog, stopstarvingstudents.blogspot.com, emphasizes the importance of helping potential students, especially refugees.

“While I was living in North Carolina, I came in contact with many Burmese refugees who wanted to go to school but couldn’t afford it,” explained Peck. “It inspired me to find a way to make the scholarships and grants, reserved for refugees, easier for them to access.”

With his up and running program, scholarplan.org, Peck hopes to get high schools and counselors in the area using his scholarship access app, and use the money from that to help refugees better access grants to attend college.

All five finalists received a cash prize, sponsored by Zion’s Bank. The fifth place cash prize was $25, whereas the first place finalist was awarded $1,000. These finalists plan to use their reward money to continue and develop their proposed business ideas.
