Casey Bown, a student attending Snow College, recently won the Utah Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers Collegiate Discussion Meet.
According to utfb.fb.org, this competition sponsors three competitions for young farmers and ranchers between the ages of 18-35.
The Discussion Meet contest is a meeting in which contestants participate in a discussion of a pre-determined topic. Agricultural problems are discussed and developing solutions are proposed while judges look for the participant that offers constructive criticism, cooperation, and communication.
This competition is designed to build crucial skills in young, active leaders in agriculture on the collegiate level. Members build basic discussion skills and develop an understanding of important agricultural issues.
The Snow College Chapter winner was Casey Bown of Fayette, Utah. As a reward for winning, Bown will receive an all expenses paid trip to Virginia Beach to compete nationally in the 2014 Young Farmers and Ranchers Leadership Conference.
Two other winners will accompany him, where two of the three will compete against college students from around the country for a $2,500 scholarship. The competition is set to take place on February 8th and 9th.
Bown enjoys farming, hunting, wakeboarding, and racing his motorcycle. He plans on continuing the family tradition of farming going as they have plans to expand to a 3,000-cow dairy. Bown is the son of Bob and Janice Bown of Fayette.
