Coming Up With a Business Idea

Thinking of starting a business but have a hard time coming up with the idea? The truth is, a unique business idea is not necessary for success. There are a lot of companies today that have similar ideas and they make profits. Still, the most difficult part is taking the time to create an idea. There’s no complete solution or a road to follow, success depends on the person and the amount of effort put in.
Being an entrepreneur means to make the world a better place through smarter inventions, usable services or products. It’s an opportunity that any person can take. There are famous entrepreneurs worldwide that have affected our world.
Coming up with an idea, most of the time, will be done by researching and scanning the environment. Think about what is missing in this world, in everyday life. Brainstorm for solutions and possibilities. The best ideas are usually about solving a current problem.
When walking around campus or the grocery store, look around and start noticing things that are wrong or inefficient that could be improved. Most importantly, have a passion for the work. As the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
No one starts thinking without being motivated. As founder of Virgin Group, Richard Branson said, “My biggest motivation? Just to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long University education that I never had—every day I’m learning something new.” At Snow College, students are motivated by competing in the annual Opportunity Quest competition held in November.
Competitors come up with a business idea and create a business plan, just as in real-life. The award for first place is $1000. Lunches are held for students to listen to stories told by entrepreneurs about how they succeeded with their business idea to help them find inspiration. Entrepreneurs can come from any background or school.

Jennifer Brethack is from Stockholm, Sweden and is currently a senior at Snow College studying for a bachelor’s in Public Relations.
