The Snow College Badgers took to the field on Saturday, looking for a playoff win against the Matadors of Arizona Western College. When all was said and done, the Badgers walked away with a hard fought 36-28 victory.
Hoping to re-create the same success that led them to victory two weeks ago against the same Matadors, Snow came out hard on the first drive of the game, eventually scoring a touchdown when Jordan Ozosky caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Crosby Jensen.
Arizona Western then came out furiously the rest of the first quarter, scoring three straight touchdowns, one on a 42-yard interception return by Dominique Blackmon, and two more when quarterback Tyler Rogers and running back Brandon Gainer ran for one and 43 yards, respectively.
The second quarter saw the Badgers come back with a pair of touchdowns, as Jeffie Johnson scored from 4 yards and Chris Bethley caught an 11-yard pass from Jensen. Johnson’s score was set up when Badger LaRonji Vason blocked a punt to give Snow the ball at the Matador eight-yard line.
The second half was all Badgers.
First Kimble Jensen returned a 13-yard interception for the only score in the third quarter. Then the Badgers recorded a safety when Tre James and Arthur Brindenstine forced an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone. Spencer Groner then banged through field goals from 29 and 26 yards in the fourth quarter.
Snow College played solid defense, forcing a fumble and an interception while shutting out the Matadors in the last 40 minutes of play.
The Badger offense also clicked, gaining 192 yards on the ground, much of it coming from workhorse Daniel Palepoi, who had 131 yards rushing on 19 carries. Crosby Jensen tossed two touchdown passes.
The Badgers improve to 4-6 on the season, and will close out their season next week playing the winner of the Pima-Glendale game played later tonight.
