This has been a year of triumphs and successes for the Snow College Rodeo Team. It is the first year that Snow College has had a rodeo team. On the second week of April, the team travelled to Grand Junction, Colorado and competed in their final rodeo of their season. At the competition, a number of Snow College students nailed down winnings. Cody Franson placed 4th in the average for bareback riding and Keaton Newman placed 3rd in the tie- down average for the weekend. In bull riding, Kurtis Turner placed 2nd in the average and Colton Carter placed 1st in both rounds and for the average for the course of the competition. Carter was also awarded the title of All Around Cowboy for the Colorado Mesa University Rodeo.
Since the competition was the final one of the regular season, there were also region awards given out to the competitors. The awards earned by Snow College students are as follows:
Cody Franson: 4th place in bareback riding
Keaton Newman: 5th place in the tie down roping
Kurtis Turner: 4th in bull riding
Colton Carter: Reserve Saddle Bronc Riding Champion, Reserve Bull Riding Champion, 2014 Rocky Mountain Region All Around Cowboy
Carter earned the most coveted title in rodeo (2014 Rocky Mountain Region All Around Cowboy) and will be representing Snow College when he attends the College National Finals Rodeo this summer. It is there that Carter will be competing for the national title in both bronc riding and bull riding, as well as for the All Around Cowboy. [Insert quote from Carter, which I have not received back yet.]
The Snow College Rodeo Team has represented Snow College in a way that strikes pride into the hearts of many. It was an impressive first year of having a team assembled, which bodes well for years to come.
