Anita Sarkeesian is a feminist game critic who was planning on presenting at Utah State University on October 15 regarding the portrayal of women in video games. A threatening email was sent to Utah State University saying that there would be “the deadliest school shooting in American history” if Sarkeesian gave her speech. Sarkeesian has been the victim of threats before and was initially planning on continuing as planned.

The Utah State University website posted at 4 p.m. on October 14 that precautions would be taken to ensure the safety of students and that the schedule would follow what was originally planned. Three hours later, the website posted again, this time saying the event would be canceled. Sarkeesian asked whether weapons would be allowed in the venue and she was informed that anyone with a concealed firearms permit would legally be allowed to bring a weapon. Upon hearing this news, Sarkeesian decided it was best to cancel the event.
