Oscar season is here. On January 15, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for the 88th annual Academy Awards. The nominees for Best Motion Picture are: The Revenant, Bridge Of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room, The Big Short, Brooklyn, and Spotlight. Many are surprised by the number of blockbuster movies that were nominated, as the Oscars have nominated many lesser-known films in recent years.
Perhaps more than all the nominees, many are hoping this is the year Leonardo DiCaprio captures his first Oscar for his role as Hugh Glass in the recently released film The Revenant. Other nominees for Best Actor in a leading role include Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, and Matt Damon in The Martian.
Two past winners are nominated in the Best Actress in a leading role category this year. Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for her role in Joy, and Cate Blanchett for Carol. The three others are first time nominees: Brie Larson for Room, Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years, and Saorise Ronan for Brooklyn.
For the second year in a row, the Oscars have come under scrutiny for nominating all Caucasian actors and actresses in the four acting categories. Many thought performances given by Idris Elba in Beasts Of No Nation and Will Smith in Concussion were deserving of Oscar recognition.
To see who will win the awards, tune in to ABC on February 28th 5:00pm Mountain time to watch the 88th Annual Academy Awards.
