Memories are just that, memories, unless they can be captured and cherished for years to come.

That is the goal that the Snow College Ambassador’s wanted to accomplish with their time capsule activity. With the new Science building being built, they felt that this was the perfect opportunity to encapsulate what Snow College was like before this big change occurred.

Emma Lowe, an Ambassador who was working on the activity, described the event, “It is a really good way to commemorate the transition from the old Science building to the new one.” The event spanned three days, and was held at the Plaza as well as the Bell Tower. Donations as items were accepted, and every participant was able to take a polaroid to give to the time capsule.

Time capsules have been a tradition since before the 1900’s and have been cherished ever since. Depending on the scale of the event, the status of wherever the time capsule is placed, and the length time before viewing the time capsule will change. It could be anywhere from ten to one thousand years before the opening of the capsule.

One participant of the event, Devin Leavitt, said, “Once the old [science] building is torn down, new students will not know what was there. This is an awesome way to preserve a memory.” Snow College has existed since 1888. In the 129 years that the school has been around, a lot of things have changed. With the success of Snow College, it is feasible to say that the school can be around in another 129 years.

It will be interesting to see in decades to come how Snow College will change and how it will be the same. This time capsule has preserved a snapshot in Snow’s history for years to come, and with change being eminent the time at which this capsule is opened will be a memorable time for all.
