President Donald Trump ordered the United States military to attack Syria with fifty-nine tomahawk missiles after Syria’s recent chemical attack that resulted in taking the lives of several civilians.

On Thursday, April 6th of 2017, Trump made his first planned military mission since being in office. His order, for the United States military to release fifty-nine Tomahawk missiles at an airbase in Syria. This came after the news of the recent chemical attack that occurred in Syria, which killed over eighty Syrian people with the use of chemical weapons including sarin and nerve gas. The backlash of the use of chemical weapons in Syria’s chemical attack cost the lives of many innocent women and children and left over three-hundred people wounded.

According to USA Today, Trump discussed his reasoning for the attack by stating, “It is in the vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.”

It is a transition from Trump’s previous statements in 2013 opposing US involvement in Syria. Opponents claim he is being hypocritical, while supporters praise his quick and decisive action.

Secretary of State Tillerson and Secretary of Defense Mattis both suggested that the com- mittment to defeating ISIS was the major goal in Syria, while UN Ambassador Nikki Haley said that regime change was necessary to mid- dle eastern stability.

Only time will tell if the response is part of a larger strategy, or simply a response to the regimes use of chemical weapons.
