The NFL has awarded Salt Lake City the rights to an NFL team. The St. Louis Rams organization was between moving to either Utah or Southern California. Salt Lake City ended up beating Los Angeles in the bidding war.
Salt Lake City will build a stadium to house the new team, and they will move operations to Utah for the 2016-2017 season. The team will remain in the NFC West division along with the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks. The move from St. Louis to Salt Lake City makes the division more compact.
The Miller family, who also owns the Utah Jazz, will receive ownership of the franchise. Tom Benson is the sole owner of the New Orleans Saints of the NFL and the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA. The Millers have already reached an agreement with Benson regarding a name change. The Salt Lake City NFL team will receive rights to the Saints name while the New Orleans NBA team will regain the rights to the Jazz name. New names for the remaining teams are still yet to be decided.
The Salt Lake City Saints are projected to sell-out their stadium during the inaugural season due to the high demand for an NFL team in Utah.
