Real Salt Lake (RSL) is Utah’s very own professional soccer team. They compete in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). Their home stadium is the Rio Tinto Stadium, also known as the RioT in Sandy. The current coach of Real Salt Lake is Jeff Cassar, who became head coach at the beginning of the 2014 season. RSL was created in 2004, and is in its 12th year of being a major league sport.  The team has made it to the playoffs nine times. Real Salt Lake won the 2009 MLS cup in which they were awarded with a star to put above their logo. The main rival of RSL is the Colorado Rapids. They are the closest team geographically; they also both compete for the Rocky Mountain Cup.

This year’s season started March 6, 2016  against Orlando City Soccer Club, resulting in a tie 2-2. Real Salt Lake’s first home game is March 12, 2016 against the Seattle Sounders. Champions League had RSL for two games before in Mexico where RSL lost the first game and tied the second; they were eliminated. Even though they lost in Mexico, Nick Rimando had this to say, “A lot of pride went into tonight’s game and effort. If we play like this I think the season is going to be bright for us.”

Players to watch this season are Juan Manuel Martinez, Yura Movsisyan, and Joao Plata. Juan Manuel Martinez (aka El Burrito) was added half way through the season last year.  He played for the Argentinian national team. Yura Movsisyan played for RSL in 2007 and 2009 and then went over to Europe to play and has been instrumental in the European soccer clubs making their playoffs. He was here when RSL won their championship. Joao Plata was injured last year during the training season and was unable to play.  This year he is back and ready to go.
