With Hurricane Norbert moving farther inland, many areas in the southwest region, including the Utah
Arizona border, are flooding. The flooding that occurred on the Utah Arizona border on Monday has
closed parts of Interstate 15.
The Utah Department of Transportation has stated that, “I-15 is closed from exit 2, Southern Parkway in
St. George through Arizona and Nevada. All routes from Utah to Las Vegas, Nevada are closed.” Officials
have also stated that sections of I-15 are closed from Mesquite to Las Vegas at Moapa due to the road
being washed out.
Not only has there been flooding damage throughout I-15, but record rainfall has also been recorded in
the Phoenix, Arizona area. The National Weather Service recorded 3.29 inches of rainfall at the Phoenix
airport. The flood damage in Phoenix has engulfed cars, flooded streets, created power outages and has
left two people dead.
The governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, issued a state of emergency, telling all non-essential state workers
to stay home. This state of emergency encourages people to stay aware and up to date on the
reopening of these particular roadways.
