Will the real single ladies please stand up? These past few semesters, I have been in a number of arguments with girls on the topic of dating.

All too often I hear that guys are horrible and it is our job to do all the work when it comes to dating. I am a big believer in chivalry and that there are certain expectations a guy must fulfill, however; I believe the problem starts with the ladies.

One reason guys are neglecting to ask girls out is the overuse of phones. We just started a new semester and I noticed that all my classes are the same. We go in the first day, find our seat and pull out our phones. Our phones are our escape from reality and what better time to escape reality than the first day.

Freshman Shad Rawlings commented on the topic, “I think it is ridiculous that girls expect guys to ask them out but then they don’t even give them a chance to. They are constantly on their phones.”  I couldn’t agree more. Girls, if you want a guy to ask you out you need to get off your phones and make yourselves available.

Another Snow College student, Justin Poulson, put it this way, “I don’t think I would ever walk up to a girl who is busy on her phone and ask her out or really even talk to her. I think most guys are like me and they would only pursue a girl if she seemed to be available.”

According to my interpersonal communications class, availability is one of the top aspects that males are looking for in females. So girls again, if you want someone to ask you on a date you need to act like it. And in many cases maybe even over exaggerate it because guys will miss the “hints” you are dropping.

I think most guys are like me in the fact that when something needs to get done, there is no sense in beating around the bush. We just say it how it is. Guys are most likely oblivious to the hints that seem obvious to you. Some girls are very forward and while that is not always the best approach, those are usually the girls who get the guys.

Relationships, even in their youngest stages are still a two-way street. So girls, if you want your knight in shining armor to ask you out or even just that guy in your chemistry class, put your phones away and make yourselves available. Do this and you will get dates.
