People know Martin Luther King Jr. as the man with a dream. They know that he was also assassinated.  Very few people know much about him other than his speech.  Here are some facts that you may not know about him.

He was born by the name of Michael King Jr., but at the age of two when his father decided to change his own name, he went ahead and changed his son’s name also.

At the age of 12, he tried to take his own life.  After learning that his grandmother had passed away, he was so upset by the news that he jumped out of the second story window of his home.

The day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he wasn’t the only one to pass away that day.  One of the by standers had a heart attack from watching the incident and later died.

The reason Reverend King was out on the balcony when he was killed is because he had gone out for a smoke.  However, you will not see pictures of him smoking because he didn’t want his kids to take up smoking.

Reverend King skipped two grades in high school.  He began college at the age of 15, and had received his bachelor’s degree at the age of 19.

MLK was put in jail 29 times.  He was put in jail for acts of disobedience and minor things.  He was put in jail for going 30 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Recent Snow College student, Bailey Vera said, “I had no idea that Martin Luther King Jr. had any of these interesting facts happen in his life.  It’s exciting to learn something new about him.”
