Get 13 credit hours and never set foot in a classroom. That’s what students in the Outdoor Leadership Program, directed by Whitney Ward, did with the immersion experience.
The immersion experience consisted of five students traveling around the state doing hands-on learning. These students had opportunities to go river rafting, help rehabilitate and clean up hiking trails, get a behind the scenes look at how large and small parks are run, and gain experience in many other aspects of the business of outdoors.
The Outdoor Leadership Program has a strong emphasis in entrepreneurship. In this program, students learn how to run the business side of outdoor life. It teaches students how to run a park or an outdoor company. These could be very viable skills for a young entrepreneur in the Utah area.
There are over six billion dollars spent on outdoor recreation in Utah. There are 65,000 jobs available in the outdoor industry in Utah alone. This industry is growing. It is predicted to grow 19% by 2020. With a growing economy comes a growing interest.
Snow’s Outdoor Leadership and Entrepreneurship Program is unique to the rest in the state, with its hands-on and direct approach. It is designed to specifically meet the needs of the outdoor market. When students graduate from the Snow College Outdoor Leadership Program, they will have a degree with certificates that will have them ready to go straight into the workforce.
