Snow College student Austin Abel is studying Communications, and wants to be a filmmaker. Abel, a cinephile, says, “I want to be the next Peter Jackson.”
Abel grew up in Fruit Heights, Utah, and graduated from Davis High in 2014. Abel served an LDS mission in Baltimore, Maryland in fall 2014. In addition to filmmaking, Abel said his other hobbies include, “Prop replica, cosplay, Magic/Judging, [playing] Ukulele, DnD, and long walks on the beach.”
For the last two or three years Abel has been fascinated with all of the behind-the-scenes parts of film. Abel said what fascinates him most about film is, “the concept that movies and stories can impact people in such a powerful way. Fictional people and events, yet they have such an impact on us.”
Abel lists his favorite movie as “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but really all of the Middle-Earth movies.” Abel described becoming fascinated with the filmmaking process after seeing what happened behind-the-scenes of those films, saying, “The complexity and teamwork that goes into a movie. The costumes, props, sets, writing, [and] music. Movies really are one of the hallmarks [of] media.”
Abel also listed some of his other favorites, such as Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson as his favorite book, Hero (from the anime One Punch Man) as his favorite song, and green as his favorite color.
Abel plans to finish his time at Snow either this semester or next, and then plans to attend Utah State University.
