Marvel Studios has recently announced that in partnership with Sony Pictures they are bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The announcement was a shock to some while others thought that it was only a matter of time that a partnership would be introduced. Sony Pictures has had two franchises starring the web head with a trilogy of movies entitled Spider-Man directed by Sam Rami and staring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and most recently a reboot of the franchise entitled “The Amazing Spider-Man,” directed by Marc Webb with Andrew Garfield taking over the role of Spider-Man. Sony has had plans to make a shared movie universe with the rebooted “Amazing Spider-Man” with a Venom and Sinister Six movie in the works. After “The Amazing Spiderman 2” made less than anticipated at the box office, Sony was left with doubts on what to do with the franchise.

Speculation on whether the wall-crawler would be joining the MCU had begun in December of 2014 when a series of emails were leaked as a result of the Sony Pictures being hacked. The emails had stated that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had talked about a deal to introduce Spider-Man into the Marvel Studios movie line up as part of their Phase 3 line- up. Their “Phase 3” line- up includes: “Ant-Man,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II,” “Captain Marvel,” and “The Inhumans.”

Doug Belgrad, President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group said, “Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future.” Marvel has plans to have focus on Peter Parker dealing with the drama of high school while having an alternate identity as the superhero Spider-Man. Actors Logan Lerman of “Fury” and the Percy Jackson series and Dylan O’Brien of “The Maze Runner” are rumored to portray the iconic web slinger.
