On Monday, March 23, 2015, the Western Swing dance team packed their bags and loaded on to the bus for what they thought was going to be the trip of their lifetime. Little did they know disaster would strike and leave them all wondering what they had gotten themselves into.
When the team first arrived, the trip was starting out great. Each team member had already had three pieces of chicken fried steak and was drinking sweet tea by the gallon, but that’s when disaster hit. As the team walked outside, they could see the tornado coming from a mile away, taking everything in its path with it. They ran back into Billy Bob’s restaurant, where teammate Cody Robinett rushed everyone to the cellar in hopes of keeping them alive.
As the tornado hit, the power suddenly went out, putting the team into a panic and leaving some weeping, some sobbing and some just praying for their lives. The swing team knew they must act quickly and get back to their bus. That’s when team leader, Mark Robbins got the idea to dig a tunnel back to the bus. He had come up with a plan just crazy enough to work. The team mapped out where they had parked the bus and immediately started to dig. Hours later, they could see daylight and that’s when they knew, they had made it. No one had ever been so thankful to see the large orange bus that they once considered a nightmare.
