The Winter Olympics took place this year in Beijing, China and in total, the United States competitors took 25 medals home. 

Eight gold medals were taken home by United States competitors, one being Nathan Chen. Nathan Chen, born in Salt Lake, competed in the men’s free skating and scored a 332.60, winning him the gold. Chen is also the first Asian American to win gold in the men’s figure skating category.

Another gold medalist is Chloe Kim in women’s halfpipe. This was her second gold medal and she won them back to back. By winning this gold medal, Kim became the first woman to win two gold medals in women’s halfpipe. 

Colby Stevenson took home one of the ten silver medals won by the United States this year. He competed in freestyle skiing, men’s big air. Stevenson was in a car accident in 2016 and it was questioned if he would be able to compete again, but overcoming those challenges he won his silver medal.

The group Joey Mantia, Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran took home bronze medals to help with the seven won by the United States. Competing in speed skating, men’s team pursuit they were able to beat the reigning world champions, the Netherlands.
