Roommate experiences can be really bad or really great. Some of it comes down to luck, but a lot
depends on how the situation is handled. Learning to live with roommates is one of the biggest
adjustments in college, and there are a few things that can help make the transition smoother.
Many students at Snow College have been raised in the same town or lived in the same house
their entire lives and have never had to live with a roommate. Life can feel predictable and
comfortable, but moving into a new place can change that quickly. Suddenly, nothing feels fully
“owned” anymore. The bathroom, kitchen counter, drawers, and even the quiet are no longer
private. At home, routines make sense. In a dorm, everyone typically has their own habits and
ideas of what “clean” means.
Adjustment
Even living with a best friend requires change. Sharing a space means organizing belongings,
respecting boundaries, and setting expectations early on. Small things make a difference. One
roommate might forget to lock the door, while another leaves dishes in the sink. It usually does
not take long to realize that living together requires shared responsibility.
Communication
Conflict is normal. What matters is how it is handled. Avoiding problems might feel easier at first, but small frustrations build over time. Sometimes it simply takes a conversation and a basic system to prevent issues from becoming bigger than they need to be. Boundaries are not dramatic. They are healthy.
Personal Growth
Living with someone else reveals a lot about personal habits and preferences. Some things truly
matter, while others are easier to let go of. Compromise is not losing; it is choosing the
relationship over being right. Sharing a space stretches people in ways staying home never could. It can be uncomfortable at first, but those challenges are often what lead to growth. Communication and adjustment are key to creating a better roommate experience. Most of the time, life improves for everyone involved.
