The Natural Science Division hosted its annual Hike to the S on Oct. 1, offering students a trail

walk, free hamburgers, and tours of the Ephraim City hydroelectric power plant.

All students in mathematics, science, or engineering classes and their friends were invited to

experience the hike. Originally planned for Sep. 17, the hike was rescheduled due to a

thunderstorm. Activities during the hike included cloud identification posters and a local plant life

scavenger hunt.

At the S, popsicles were available for students who made it to the S. Back at the trail head,

students were invited to look at the sun through a set of solar telescopes and learn fun facts

about the sun. Any student that had completed the hike was then welcome to free hamburgers.

Ephraim City’s hydroelectric power plant was open for students to tour, including the 120 year

old generator, the oldest hydro plant in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River.

Students learned that together with the two generators installed in the 1980s, Ephraim City is

able to provide for as much as 80% of their electrical needs.

Leelah, a freshman Agribusiness major, was invited by her biology teacher during class. After

completing the hike, she sat down with a friend for some hamburgers. When asked what her

favorite part of the hike was, Leelah said, “The top was pretty great. The popsicles at the top too

were pretty great.”

Activities like these are an excellent way for students to take a break from homework, get active,

and make connections with fellow classmates.
