Each spring, the skies above Snow College glow with the soft, golden light of hundreds of floating lanterns, marking one of the most magical nights of the year—the Lantern Festival.

Held in Richfield, the Lantern Festival has quickly become a favorite tradition among students. Inspired by the Chinese Lantern Festival and similar celebrations around the world, Snow College’s version gives students the chance to write down wishes, dreams, or messages on paper lanterns and release them into the night sky.

“It’s honestly one of the most beautiful things I’ve experienced here,” said Abby M., a second-year student. “There’s something peaceful about watching your lantern float away and thinking about the future.”

The event brings together both students and members of the local community, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Zac Hadfield shared, “My favorite part of the festival was being with my girlfriend—it made the whole experience a lot more exciting. The turnout was really great. There were some students from the college, but even more people from the community. We got to listen to a live band, and they had food trucks there. The actual setting off of the lanterns was the best part. The music and the sight made it a really magical night for sure.”

Snow College’s student government and volunteers help organize the event, making sure everything runs smoothly and safely. Fire safety precautions and environmentally-friendly lanterns are a top priority, with many lanterns designed to be biodegradable or collected after landing nearby.

While Richfield may not be a bustling city, the Lantern Festival is a reminder that even in small towns, big moments can happen. “It makes Snow feel special,” said Marcus J., a freshman. “It’s one night where everything just slows down, and we all come together.”

Whether students write a personal wish, honor someone important to them, or simply enjoy the view, the Lantern Festival has become a beloved tradition. It brings light to a quiet town, both literally and figuratively.

In a place where entertainment options can be limited, the Lantern Festival is a glowing reminder of the beauty of community, hope, and shared dreams—lighting up Snow College one lantern at a time.
