As the holidays come to an end and the second semester begins, it can be hard to stay
motivated and productive during this time of year. These cold winter months may make many
students feel tired, stressed, and often lonelier. The start of the spring semester can be
difficult, but there are many strategies to use that can help students in avoiding the “winter
blues”.
1. Stay active
There are many things to do on campus and around Ephriam. Both inside and outside.
Lawrence university, in an article about the winter blues, explained that physical exercise
releases endorphins that improve your mood and relieve stress. Try taking a walk around
Ephraim, attend activities offered around campus, or take a free yoga class from the
wellness center. One student at Snow College that is taking a yoga class said. “I look
forward to my class, it’s a good chance to relax and move my body”
2. Seek sunlight
With the cold weather and shorter days, students experience a lack of sunlight during the
winter months. This can lead to students producing less serotonin and melatonin, making
them feel more tired during the day. Make it a goal to try and go outside for a few
minutes every day. Even on an overcast day, the light exposure can still be beneficial to a
person’s mental health. One student from Snow said one of his favorite activities to do
over the winter is make snowmen with his friends.
3. Stay connected
Students can often feel more isolated in the winter. Making valuable connections and
being social can help combat those feelings. Plan activities with your friends, reach out to
your classmates or join one of the many clubs that Snow has to offer. These social
interactions can help students in staying motivated and productive throughout the winter.
4. Visit the wellness center
Students can find the wellness center either by going on the Snow website or by visiting
the actual building located behind the business building. This resource can be helpful
both in avoiding the winter blues and providing information on what you can do if you’re
feeling down. Snow also has wellness advocates that can support the community and
provide helpful information to any student that needs it.
