During the holiday break many students went home to spend time with family and friends, but not the Presidency of Snow Colleges very own Utah Health Scholars. From the 15th to the 21st six students, as well as one advisor, accompanied 17 other students from Utah Tech, SUU, and The University of Utah on a cultural immersion trip to the Dominican Republic.

Once there the group would in most cases go to stations throughout Santo Domingo to San Juan. To gain patient exposure, as well as shadowing experience, they would then screen patients by taking their blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight, then guiding any given patient to one of two doctors which were on sight.

One of which was a dentist that mostly did tooth extractions, Reed Abercrombie ads, the current UHS President. Once a patient went through the screening process and met with a doctor, the doctor might have prescribed one of the multiple donated over the counter drugs to help the patient to become better.

If not there were plenty of toys that were donated to help the children find happiness.

Ginny Smith, the advisor in attendance said that “it was amazing to see the student take the culture of supportiveness that the Dominicans had and apply it to not only their presidency but their everyday life.”

Any student is given this opportunity in the UHS program all they have to do to get involved is learn more from room 221 in the GRSC.
