Sports are built around experienced players, and the point guards for Coach Zu Grinsell’s Snow College Women’s basketball team are a picture perfect example of why.

Coach Zu’s returning sophomore point guards, Brooke Pennington and Maliyah Elliot, have led the Lady Badgers to a great start. With 12 games left to play, the experienced back court play has Snow already matching last season’s total win number at 12.

When asked about Pennington and Elliott’s impact in leadership roles, Coach Zu stated, “They both do a good job with everything they do… Brooke’s definitely more of that vocal leadership that our team really responds to and we go with Maliyah if she’s doing well, than we do well.”

No.4 Brooke Pennington, the 5’5” sophomore guard from Springville Utah, is having a fantastic sophomore season starting in 17 out of 18 games. She is also leading the Badgers in scoring and assists with 11.1 points per game and 3.5 assists per game, including a career-high 19 points at Utah State Eastern.

Pennington’s back court mate, Maliyah Elliot, rounds out the returning back court and is having an incredible season herself, being one of the most energetic and electrifying players to watch in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Elliot is not far behind Pennington in the scoring column, averaging 10.7 points herself, including a career-high 22 points early in the season at home against Western Wyoming.

The improvement from both Pennington and Elliott has not gone unnoticed, Coach Zu implied, “Both of them get in extra shots all the time so they're not just going when we’re in practice which makes a big difference and you can see it in their percentages and the way that they're playing.”

Elliott and Pennington have been the leaders throughout the season and have been reliably productive in the back court for Coach Zu helping the team start off the season 7-0, including a win over the then ranked number 10 Casper College Thunderbirds at the Horne Activity Center and an appearance at No.25 in week two of the National Junior College Athletics Association top 25 rankings.

Pennington and Elliott look to lead their team to a pair of wins in their next two games at  College of Southern Idaho on Thursday, January 30 at 5pm and two days later on Saturday, February 1 at North Idaho College with a 1pm tipoff before returning home to take on Colorado Northwestern Community College on Thursday, February 6 at 5pm.
